Karnala bird sanctuary



Karnala is wonderful place to discover & observe the nature. This bird sanctuary is located about 60 km in south of Mumbai, in Panvel taluka of Raigad district. The area of Karnala bird sanctuary is about 12.1 square kilometres, this is quite small but full of wonders. This is the sanctuary truly for the birds & butterflies. The sanctuary is stretch out around the Karnala fort.
Karnala bird sanctuary was established in 1971, this is home of approximately 190 species of birds. The sanctuary is well known for the protruding peak or rock which is looking like funnel shaped loudspeaker, commonly in Marathi this loudspeaker is called as ‘Karna’, this is the reason that it is named as Karnala.
The number of migratory birds visits Karnala during winter season that comes from their Himalayan breeding ground, western ghat & peninsular India. This time is good to see the birds like Grey Drongos, Tree Pipits, Blue-headed Rock Thrushes, Nilgiri wood Pigeons, Warblers & Grey headed Mynas.
Along with the bird watchers Karnala is also favourite spot for professional mountain climbers.
Karnala fort is also tourist attraction at Karnala.  This fort consists of two fort in which one is at lower level and another is at higher level.

Tip for Visitors: It is best to visit between October to April for bird watching. However you may enjoy greenery during Monsoon.
Also it is important to carry food with you while entering in sanctuary.

Plant Life: Verities of plant found in Karnala such as Mango, Koshmb, Nana, Kalam, Umbar, Asana & Teak.
Bird Life: There are more than 150 species of bird found in Karnala during October to April. Some of them are Grey Drongos, Tree Pipits, Blue-headed Rock Thrushes, Nilgiri wood Pigeons, Warblers & Grey headed Mynas.
Animal Life: along with the birds there are some animals like wild boar, four-horned antelope, common langur & muntjak are also found in sanctuary.

How to Reach:
By Air: Mumbai (62 km) is the nearest airport from Karnala.
By Train: Nearest railway station from Karnala is at Panval (12 km).
By Road: There are regular buses ply between Mumbai & Panvel. From Panvel taxi or auto is avaible.
