Shivneri Fort: Birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Shivneri fort is well known in the history of Maratha Empire cause this is the birthplace of the maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj which is the founder of the Maratha empire. This fort is located near Junnar town, about 96 km from north of Pune. Situated on 300 m high isolated hill.
The fort is triangular in shape. The fort is narrow is the north & the base is in the south. Boundary wall of the fort was build so high to protect the fort from enemies. Because of the fort is unique & difficult to reach, Shahaji Maharaj father of Shivaji Maharaj kept his wife Jijabai in fort during her pregnancy. This is the place where Shivaji spend his childhood & took his military training lessons. This fort is also ideal place for trekking.
Architectural style of the Shivneri fort is unique. Badami talav is in the centre of the fort. Also there are two water springs in the fort which flows throughout year are called Ganges & Yamuna. There is the temple of goddess Shivai Devi inside the fort.

Tip For Visitors: During summer this place is really hot so avoid to visit during Summer.

What to see on Fort:

Temple of Shivaidevi: While getting in fort from seven door root, after the fifth door in the right side there is the temple of goddess Shivaidevi. Behind the temple there are 6 to 7 caves which are not good fot living.

Umbarkhana: In the front of the seventh door there is the UmberKhana which was used to store food. In 1673 Dr. John Frayar visited this fort & he noted that on this forthaving the storage of food for thousend family for seven years.

Shivkung: This is the monument of Chh. Shivaji Maharaj on Shivneri fort. This monument was build & inaugurate by the first Chief minister of Maharashtra Yashavantrao Chavan.
Shivjanmastan (Birthplace of Chh.Shivaji Maharaj): This is a bulding on shivneri fort where Shivaji was born. This is two floor bulding, in which Shivaji was born in ground floor.
How to Reach:
By Air: Nearest airport to this fort is at pune (96 km).
By Train: Pune railway station is the nearest railway junction from Shivaneri fort.
By Road: State as well as private buses are connect Junnar to many important cities of Maharashtra like Mumbai (156 km), Pune & Nashik (149 km).
