The “Gate Way of India” is one of the most well-known monument of Mumbai. It is located at the tip of salvaged land of Apollo Bunder area in South Mumbai. It was constructed in the honor of King George V and his Queen Marry's first ever visit to the Mumbai (Bombay that time). The Gateway is the first thing that can be seen when arriving Mumbai via Arabian Sea by Boat. The monument is the popular place of tourist attraction and a meeting point with many vendors selling balloons, ice cream ti Indian tea.
Gateway is located on the waterfront of Apollo Bunder; adjoin the Mumbai Harbor and Arabian Sea in the Colaba area of South Mumbai opposite to Taj Palace and Tower Hotel.
The Gateway of India us shaped as an arched and are 85 feet tall. It was used as arriving place for British governors and other high rank officials to Bombay.
Near the Gateway of India is majestic and historic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, whose foundation was laid by Jamshetji Tata in the year 1898. The Taj oped in 1903, 20 years before Gateway of India and was one of the most modern hotels in Asia.
The Gateway was designed by George Wittet (1878-1926) was a Scottish architect who worked mostly in Bombay. The structural design consists of both the “Hindu” and “Muslim” architectural styles. The decorations were done in Hindu style while basalt arch was built by Muslim style. It was built from yellow basalt which was obtained from locality and reinforced concrete was used first time in India to provide strength to the structure. Screen with slash were brought from Gwalior.
Sir George Sydenham Clarke the governor of Bombay laid the foundation stone on March 31, 1911. The design was approved in August 1914. But due to work on Apollo Bunder the project was extended and foundations were completed in 1920 and construction was finished in December 1924.
Gateway has a height of 85 feet above ground to its open. The center dome has a diameter of 14.4 meters (48 feet). The whole harbor was calibrated to make Gateway come in line with the seafront. Cost of Gateway is approximately 21 lakhs. Due to insufficient funds the road approaching it was never built. Gateway is monument of patriotic pride in the city as well as one of India’s enduring architectural landmarks.
